NEW:
I invented spoiler tags for use in these forums!
How to Use: Copy the below code, and insert the Series Name, Episode #, and the relevant sensitive information.
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, QUOTE SOMEONE USING THIS SPOILER SYSTEM.
1.) You'll reveal the spoiler to yourself
2.) The quote box uses a different color, so you'll effectively uncensor the spoiler.
This sytem is obviously imperfect, and accidental spoiling could still occur even while this system is in use. This means discretion should still be practiced when writing spoiler-ific posts--if it doesn't lead to a meaningful discussion or needlessly illustrates important plot points that your intended audience should already know, then you probably shouldn't write it anyway.

==<Series Name, Episode #> SPOILER. HIGHLIGHT BELOW TO READ.==
Spoiler sensitive information goes here
==<Series Name, Episode #> SPOILER. HIGHLIGHT ABOVE TO READ.==

Example:

==<Series Name, Episode #> SPOILER. HIGHLIGHT BELOW TO READ.==

What?! No anime thread?! K, I'll make it. This is a work in progress.

This is personally written by me!

I'll include links to all legal streaming services (and whether I know it is available on Netflix!)

You can also use Kissanime.com, an illegal streaming site. YMMV
You can search them on nyaa.eu, the primary anime tracker. YMMV

This thread will be aimed at the promotion and discussion of anime, with a focus on high-quality anime for the less anime-inclined of you.

My watched/in progress/dropped list:
http://myanimelist.net/animelist/XilDarkz
I started watching anime shortly before I turned 18 at the insistence of a friend; previously I was very anti-anime, go away Naruto nerds, etc. I realized that I was judging a medium unfairly, and I can still say go away Naruto nerds while enjoying the extremely varied shows that anime encompasses. My personal ratings are given to anime based on my personal enjoyment (first) and personal critique (second). For example, I don't recommend Monogatari to everyone--it is extremely 'Japanese' and quite a bit different from anything else--but it is the best selling anime series since Blu-ray became the standard for a reason.

Subs? Dubs?
While most international anime viewers watch the shows with English subtitles over the Japanese cast, there are licensed English dubs of most every popular (and many unpopular!) anime. While older English dubs have significant quality disparities, some newer English dubs are even better than their Japanese counterparts, and most are more than sufficient. If you want to be able to watch anime without focusing on text, or while multitasking and you don't like to pause to ensure you read every word, then you might enjoy many dubbed anime. I'll try to specify whether an anime I specifically recommend has a dub or not, and if I watched it, its quality. I personally started with watching dubs and moved to subs.

Best Dubs:

Hellsing Ultimate (2006-2012)
Primary Genres: Action Drama
Length: 10 OVAs (40-60 minutes each; with yes, 6 years of production. Holy shit.)
http://i.imgur.com/Bc2is55.jpg

The best dub! All of the characters are European, many are British, and it takes place entirely in Europe... you may be disappointed in all future anime dubs after watching this.

How about a show about a gun-slinging vampire? This show is the definition of bloody, with plenty of grit and action. A manga premiering in 1997, it had an early anime adaptation. However, it was re-done as 'Hellsing Ultimate,' streamlining the story and giving it a huge budget. The result is a series of 10 OVAs (Original Video Animation, which means it was not broadcasted, and was only available via DVD/BD release) that are simply epic in both scope and quality.
Official English Site: Hellsing Ultimate - Funimation (Premium Funimation account required for ad-free/dub)

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009-2010)
Primary Genres: Action Adventure
Length: 64 Episodes
http://i.imgur.com/HNAgBU7.jpg

All of the below is in addition to the English cast being better than the Japanese! This was an extremely high budget production, with no expenses spared in animation. It looks awesome.

FMA:BH is what I consider the vanilla anime. It is usually a safe, enjoyable choice for pretty much everyone. It is the number one rated anime on the site MyAnimeList, and many others--its just good and doesn't give people a reason to dislike it. It has rather safe humor, with lots of action, a lot of high quality characters, sprinklings of utter depravity and some beacons of happiness to be crushed along with your dreams. Anime tend to be darker than almost any Western equivalent, and Fullmetal Alchemist is no exception. While few people consider this their favorite anime, almost everyone who watches it enjoys it. It uses more anime tropes and feels more 'anime-like' than Hellsing, and is a great 'gateway drug' into anime.

[SIZE=4]General Reccomendations[/U]

[b]Must Watch (Introduction to various anime genres, use these as a basis for finding other anime you may like.)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011) (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica)
Primary Genres: --REDACTED--
Length: 12 Episodes (Alternate: 2 Movies) with Movie Sequel
http://i.imgur.com/PmNqyDq.jpg

This looks like a show about young girls and their magical powers and saving the day, right? This anime is a masterpiece in destroying your preconceptions of anime. One of the best selling Blu-ray series, with amazing animation, soundtrack, and the most intelligent creative staff. This is one of a very few anime that you simply /must/ watch through. If, at first glance, it looks like you wouldn't like it... that is all the more reason to stick to it.

This anime in a word? Epic.
This anime in two words? Ridiculously Epic.
TTGL is a mecha anime about how ridiculous mecha anime are, via exaggerated demonstration. It starts slow, but it quickly spirals out of control. This anime will sometimes make you stop and think. This anime will sometimes make you stop thinking. Seriously funny, or funnily serious. This is an anime staple.

The primary issue that this anime had was terrible production quality in its first few episodes; the director was fired and replaced, and this is fixed in the movie compilations of the series, which generally go above and beyond to improve production quality.

The Future Diary (Mirai Nikki)
Primary Genres: Psychological Thriller
Length: 26 Episodes + 2 OVA
http://i.imgur.com/sfSJhJO.jpg

So, this was one of the first anime I watched, and it may have been one that got me utterly hooked on anime. The anime I watched before hand was Steins;Gate, and following it up with another thriller threatened to destroy any semblance of emotional security I had. Mirai Nikki is an anime that will make you lose your mind, in the best way possible. If you start it, you must finish it--there is no stopping this wild ride.

Never watched anime before? Try starting with:

This thread was aimed at providing accessibility, so it was intentionally 'pleb' and 'casual' as possible.

WHATEVER GUYS, I HAVE MY ORIGINAL JAPANESE RELEASE OF SHIN SEKAI YORI RIGHT HERE ON MY DESK.

also updating this thread will be mostly relegated to when I'm not watching anime, or raiding, or playing the new Hearthstone expansion of cards. which is... actually almost none of the time. I'll add anything that remotely resembles a non-troll entry into the OP.

If you're trying to get people to enjoy your medium, it would probably be best not to suggest them in the direction where their end user experience may look like this:

http://i.imgur.com/CKXfvMf.jpg

I am not opposed to streaming sites like crunchyroll, netflix, funimation, or hulu for more entry level watching. Their translations aren't the greatest, but it gets the point across. What I do not see is someone using an illegal streaming site, which are almost exclusively subs, when it is much easier to torrent off nyaa (perfectly safe, just don't download HorribleSubs because they rip directly from official streams), unless someone here still has dialup, in that case, they should really get out.

My personal recommendation if you are trying to convert people is to go back to their roots of what they may have enjoyed as kids, before they turned into narcissistic adults.
If you liked Sailor Moon, try watching Madoka. It's a dark degeneration of the genre that will give you a real taste of how deep anime can really be. Also a fantastic art style and soundtrack.
If you liked stuff like DBZ, check out Gurren Lagann. It's a silly, fun, and wild ride full of hot blooded manliness and over the top action. Please realize it is a satire of the ridiculousness of mecha genres.

Both of these two are my personal favorites (outside of One Piece) and I think span a pretty wide spectrum of what newer anime can provide in terms of compelling entertainment.

Also, you're about 1000 years too soon to be challenging my authority.

I usually view anime as a whole, and my favorite things are usually based upon screenwriting and scripts. This question becomes 1000% easier if I can answer a Writer: UROBUCHI!!!(PMMM/MSMM, Psy-P, F/Z, SnG, and more.) or Voice Actress: HanaKana! More serious answers include Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade, Keiki (its always Keiki), Saki(from Saki), Saki(from SSY), Misaka 10032, Yuno, Nia, and Homura.

the only manga I really follow at the moment is One Piece, because it is literally gold. The Whitebeard War's arc is pretty much the single greatest story arc in a manga ever.

If you want a good completed manga to read, I highly highly highly recommend Gash Bell. Don't bother with the anime (you might have seen it on Cartoon Network a decade ago under the name Zatch Bell) because its garbage. The manga though is amazing on every level. Its 323 chapters and complete, has an amazing story, an incredible ending (i was actually crying at how awesomethe final battle was the first time I read through it, it was that perfectly foreshadowed and summed up the plot), and manages to avoid by far the worst trope of shounen manga- having nobody die ever.

Everyone gets a fucking Crowning Moment of Awesome (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome?from=Main.CrowningMomentOfAwesome) . Everyone.

I believe you may have confused this anime thread for a manga thread huehue

personally, I haven't delved into manga yet. While some number of anime I've watched are manga-adaptations, many others are anime-original or visual-novel, light-novel adaptations. My main critical point is that manga is not a 'complete' format--they don't always have a clear end, and there are many incentives for a continuous narrative (money$$$) and continuous publication.

... Neither are anime? Outside of a season based system, I guess. The bigger anime are usually manga/light novel adaptations to begin with.

The long drawn out nature is endemic of anime/manga in general, or are you forgetting pretty much every shounen anime in existence?

Of course, that doesn't apply to my recommendation, because it specifically HAS ended.

My recommendations:

Parasyte : Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu

Trailer : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZE6u885b3Y

Synopsis: Based on Iwaaki Hitoshi's science-fiction horror manga by the same name.

The 17-year-old Izumi Shinichi lives with his mother and father in a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo. One night, worm-like aliens called Parasytes invade Earth, taking over the brains of human hosts by entering through their ears or noses. One Parasyte attempts to crawl into Shinichi's ear while he sleeps, but fails since he is wearing headphones, and enters his body by burrowing into his arm instead, taking over his right hand and is named Migi.

Because Shinichi was able to prevent Migi from traveling further up into his brain, both beings retain their separate intellect and personality. As the duo encounter other Parasytes, they capitalize on their strange situation and gradually form a strong bond, working together to survive. This gives them an edge in battling other Parasytes, who frequently attack the pair upon realization that Shinichi's human brain is still intact. Shinichi feels compelled to fight other Parasytes, who devour humans as food, while enlisting Migi's help.

Hurray, someone else helping me with the thread. Mirai Nikki is one of my favorite anime (my favorite thriller, actually), so I can endorse it. As well, I enjoyed Steins;Gate but not quite as much as most people, but can readily recommend it.

I see you dropped Another at episode 9 and gave it a 6. I just watched it and I think you should finish it.
I'm also in the process of watching Mawaru Penguindrum.
http://myanimelist.net/shared.php?u1=amphora&u2=XilDarkz

I think in general our ratings would be more similar if it wasn't for my careful rating into a 6 point system. (Rating everything from 4-10, where I wouldn't finish anything that I'd give a 3 or lower.)

I reserved only 4 spots for a 10 rating;
0. Shinsekai Yori (Overall Favorite, it receives an 11, but I put it at 10 because shifting every anime down 1 just to achieve that effect is going simply too far.)
1. Monogatari Series
2. Madoka Magica Rebellion
3. Future Diary
4. Nichijou

I couldn't finish Another because it became too repetitive with the events which occurred in each episode. It reminded me of watching House on TV. House is good but it becomes so repetitive with the OH IT'S THIS SICKNESS, JK IT'S THIS OTHER SICKNESS WE FIGURED OUT LAST MINUTE. Another just didn't hold my attention and needed more action for me to enjoy it.

Madoka is easily one of my other favorites just because it seems really girly but deep down it's super psychologically fucked up. Fuck that rainbow cat asshole. Evil little shit.

I also like the more girly anime too though. Kaichou wa Maid-sama and Black prince and Wolf Girl are two animes I easily enjoy that I probably would never recommend to a male.

Darker Than Black is another anime I really enjoyed and kind of reminds me of X-men.

I enjoy the psychological thrillers the most. If it's fucked up and there is gore involved then sign me up.

My recommendations:

School Days is actually the worst anime I've ever watched. It has become a sort of joke and rite of passage for anime watchers; I don't think it belongs in this thread. Unless you aren't trolling, in which case...

Fate/Zero receives a resounding reccomendation, though. (Written by the guy who wrote Madoka Magica and Psycho-pass!)

2014 Fall Season Retrospectives time!

I'm going to write two of these a day (I PROMISE), and I will include the MyAnimeList average score and rank at the bottom--its rank among ALL anime. These should always be taken with a truckload of salt, as they reflect popularity more than anything, but do roughly correspond with the community overall response.

I'm also putting together a quicklist of anime that I have watched or will watch in their entirety and write a full retrospective on.

To see all the anime of the season, here is the full chart:
https://livechart.me/fall

Quicklist: (Bolded are series that I have written and finished a retrospective on)

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works: 9/10

Chaika the Coffin Princess: Avenging Battle (Hitsugi no Chaika): 8/10
Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso): 9/10
Selector Spread WIXOSS: 7/10
Shirobako: 9/10
Celestial Method (Sora no Method): Pending/10
Yuki Yuna is a Hero (Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru): Pending/10

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
http://i.imgur.com/yMYrIu0.jpg
Visual Novel Adaptation by ufotable (Read Prologue+Starting Arc, saw original adaptation)
13 Episodes, with 3 episodes being double-length

This is the second adaptation of Fate/Stay Night, but there is a huge difference between this one and the first--this one follows the heels of the MASSIVELY successful Fate/Zero adaptation that had a huge budget. The original Fate/Stay Night adaptation was a decent random shonen anime, but did a massive disservice to the source material. I watched the original, it was meh. However, Fate/Zero was amazing and with the same studio re-adapting Fate/Stay Night, this turned out to be the most anticipated show of the season for me.

What were your expectations?
I was expecting more of Fate/Zero--epic visuals, and a psuedo-sequel. (Fate/Zero was a prequel, but, this adaptation was written with some continuity that didn't exist without Fate/Zero, so...)

Did it meet your expectations?
It exceeded them in production and animation quality--it is the best looking anime I've seen, by a decent margin. The plot execution and continuity with Fate/Zero (that the original adaptation didn't have whatsoever) were excellent, and overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I can see this being the first anime to dethrone Bakemonogatari in sales. The plot hasn't been fully realized--there's a whole second season!--so I can't quite compare it to Fate/Zero in that sense yet.

TL;DR Should I watch it?
Yes. There are no qualifiers here--it is an epic that only anime can deliver. It didn't do anything extraordinary that no other anime has done, but everything it did was done in the best way. DO NOT WATCH FATE/ZERO IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY. Fate/Stay Night was still intended to be seen first.

Official Hook Synopsis:

Fuyuki City—a city surrounded by the ocean and the mountains becomes the setting for an age old ritual. To realize the mythical Holy Grail, which is said to grant any wish from its possessor, seven masters are given seven heroic spirits chosen by the Grail. These heroic spirits or servants are: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin and Berserker. Each master will enter into a contract with their assigned servants and battle the other masters and servants to the death until only one pair remains…This is the ―Holy Grail War.

Log Horizon 2
http://i.imgur.com/uDaHpZd.jpg
Light Novel Adaptation by Studio DEEN (Watched first season)
25 Episodes (Unfinished, two-cour)

What were your expectations?
Season 2 of Log Horizon! It's gotta be more of the same right? Well...

Did it meet your expectations?
It switched animation studios. It switched to an animation studio known for doing poor adaptations (The original Fate/stay night...) and it showed. The animation quality took a nosedive... but animation and art isn't everything! It seemed to be a faithful adaptation of its source material, and kept its title of 'best in genre of "game-real-world-crossover"'... but didn't impress its existing fans. The plot was split between two characters for most of the season--with nearly equal screen-time, but only one of them was the main character of season one. Akatsuki's struggles were far less interesting than the worldly struggles that followed Shiroe from season one. Her screentime simply wasn't as engaging, and every exciting action scene was dulled sharply by the poor animation quality.

TL;DR Should I watch it?
If you liked the first season of Log Horizon, you should like this season as well: Yes.. However... if you were on the fence for watching season one, season two doesn't do you any favors. But season one is still good on its own!

Official Hook Synopsis (Season One):

The story begins when 30,000 Japanese gamers are trapped in the fantasy online game world Elder Tale. What was once a sword-and-sorcery world is now the real world. The main lead Shiroe attempts to survive with his old friend Naotsugu and the beautiful assassin Akatsuki.

i dunno about watching the new f/sn, but everyone should totally read the entirety of the f/sn visual novel. Even Heaven's Feel, no matter how depressing it gets.

It's an amazing story, that links up with the rest of the nasuverse (so if you've watched/read any other thing the dude wrote, they all take place at varying time points on the same earth, with the same systems that are really cool yet cause so much stupid nitpick arguments among fans). UWB was definitely the best route in terms of actual story, as well.

2014 Fall Season Retrospective Continued!

To see all the anime of the season, here is the full chart:
https://livechart.me/fall

Psycho-pass 2
http://i.imgur.com/g5hcj8q.jpg
(Season 1 picture, Season 2's poster has the potential to spoiler Season 1)
Anime Original by Production I.G. (Season 1 by Urobuchi, Season 2 NOT written by him) (Watched Season 1)
11 Episodes

Psycho-pass 1 was a gritty, dystopian SciFi epic by Urobuchi. It was a show that he has wanted to make since he entered the business--one of his first noted works was a doujinshi (read: Fan-Fic) Visual Novel prequel to Equilibrium, the Hollywood 2002 Dystopian SciFi movie. It built a world, and Psycho-pass 2 is a story set in his world... but it wasn't written by Urobuchi, and doesn't feel quite right to season 1 viewers.

What were your expectations?
Since Urobuchi left the series for this season, I wasn't expecting something better than season 1, but, I did expect great music and animation with an engaging story.

Did it meet your expectations?
Egoist and Ling Tosite Sigure performed the OP and ED, and were phenomenal as always. The animation was ok, with the backgrounds and designs being of a higher quality--somewhat of a disappointment. The story knew where it was going, but the pacing was a bit off--something not unusual for 11 episode series. It could've been another 5 episodes, but not another 11. While Urobuchi's flavor of creeping horror was imitated, it was never pulled off with the same finesse. The season as a whole felt like it was just that little bit off from being really great, and stayed just 'good'.

TL;DR Should I watch it?
Yes. It's a decent follow-up to season one, and a required watch for the Psycho-pass movie being released in January--the movie, unlike season two, is written by Urobuchi and will likely have a better budget, appropriate pacing, and overall is something I'm seriously pumped for. Season two won't feel like a drag, it just won't be the amazing work that Psycho-pass 1 promised.

Official Hook Synopsis:

The series takes place in the near future, when it is possible to instantaneously measure and quantify a person's state of mind and personality. This information is recorded and processed, and the term "Psycho-Pass" refers to a standard used to measure an individual's being. The story centers around the "enforcement officer" Shinya Kougami, who is tasked with managing crime in such a world.

In the future, it is possible to quantitatively measure a person's emotions, desires, and every inclination. In this way, it is also possible to measure a person's criminal tendency factor, which is used to judge criminals.

This is the story of a team of policemen dedicated to maintaining public order. Some of them work in the Enforcement Division, responsible for the apprehension of criminals, while others belong to the Supervisory Division which oversees their colleagues in Enforcement.

I'd like to highlight a specific Blogger/Reviewer, Bobduh aka Nick Creamer from AnimeNewsNetwork, and his Top 30 List:

http://wrongeverytime.com/2014/03/31/top-30-anime-series-of-all-time/

I'm linking to it and encouraging you to read it not because I think its some paragon of truth or un-biased absolute, but because he looks at shows in the way I find best--breaking them down to their constituent parts in order to look at what the show aimed to do and whether it did it well, and then taking a step back at its holistic impression.

I haven't seen all of the shows on the list, and I don't expect that anyone here has. I'm certain, however, that there is at least one title on the list that you would enjoy. Period. In that same note, I'm certain there will be shows on that list that you will not enjoy--I think Bobduh makes differentiating those clearer than I can.

In his other posts, he will absolutely shit on some shows (including ones that I thoroughly enjoyed!) so there's that, but I'm highlighting the positive here.

NGE at the top makes the list invalid.
Original NGE just falls in the category of incomplete anime. People can say what they want the story of NGE is convoluted and very fucked up with huge plot holes.
The new-ish NGE movies fill some gaps but even so still leave story that you wish they would go into.

NGE is a good anime but i wouldnt call it the best or even listing it as number 1 out of a list of 30.

I think invalidating the list based on the inevitably controversial top spot is a bit premature;;

Original NGE just falls in the category of incomplete anime. People can say what they want the story of NGE is convoluted and very fucked up with huge plot holes.
Are you counting End of Evangelion as part of the original NGE?

My perspective:
Would I give the original a 10, let alone that number one spot? No.

From what I know (being relatively new to Evangelion myself) everyone more or less posits that it is not perfect. Its plot is at times tenuous and you never really have any sort of closure. The series are ranked not in their weaknesses, but in their strengths. Evangelion has character immersion and uses the fundamental strengths of anime in its execution.

The entire series starts with Shinji being thrown into things that he doesn't comprehend, and he never really finds out. He was never questioning, he wasn't looking for the ultimate truth--he was dealing with (in his way) the world in front of him. The direction of the story is very personal, and everything is framed to that end.

The rebuilds shed the parts of it that made it weak, and streamlined and compacted itself. Every scene carries a lot of weight, in its delivery and in the lasting repercussions. The direction of the rebuilds (3.0 specifically) is often highly criticized, but whether it was the right direction to take doesn't really matter. It executes it flawlessly.

I give Evangelion 3.33 a 10. It is, on its own, many, many things. Its a spectacle to behold. The very first scene says, "This is what anime can do."

If I had to choose one thing to speak for all of anime, I would probably choose Evangelion 3.33
You can throw away the previous two movies and I think it can stand on its own. That pisses long-time fans off, I'm sure, but thats how I see it.

I could be completely 'wrong' in almost every aspect of this post, but that's how I currently see NGE.

I think Eva will always have some special place of contention among anime fans between those who are adamant it's the best show ever and those that see it as a piece of work that was never quite finished and full of holes that just happened to gain a lot of popularity very quickly, which spiraled it's design into rampant speculation. I like to think of it as the FF7 of anime, it has the potential and backbone to be a shining star in it's medium, but a lot of flaws in execution turn many away.

The main thing to remember is that the original Eva was made almost 20 years ago. Gainax also used all of their budget in the original, which was why the last two episodes are so 'wat'? until the EoE comes and tries to make some closure. I feel like a lot of 2deep4u and religious connotations were mostly brought on by speculation of fans to fill in the gaps and inconsistencies, especially because this was a big show in the early days of the internet, the dawning of an entirely new nerd culture.

I think the rebuilds, however, are doing a fantastic job of turning the show into something that very obviously has an underlying backstory, and kind of feeds on the original fan speculation to help with that.

Eva is not my personal favorite, but I can recognize it for being a quality piece of animation, as well as see the huge impact in the anime industry it made.

The character narratives that Evangelion built has inspired (or been mirrored, or copied) the characters of a huge amount of anime; at the very least, NGE allowed Hideaki Anno to give every director out there some inspiration to building characters through careful perspective.

Speaking of which;

Yuki Yuna is a Hero (Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru)
https://static.livechart.me/images/posters/9a90c1cdaa.jpg
Anime Original by Studio Gokumi (with multimedia follow-ups)
12 Episodes

The story takes place in the era of the gods, year 300. Yuki Yuna is a second year middle school student in the "Hero Club," where she and her friends take on jobs like finding homes for kittens and putting on puppet shows for Kindergartens.

What were your expectations?
SciFi (classical) or Japanese Folk (Shinto) Slice of Life were my initial expectations...

Did it meet your expectations?
This was an anime that knew fully well what your expectations were, and immediately dumps them on your head. Slice of Life? No. It is a psychological magical girl drama--yes, a Madoka-inspired anime--with a personal melodrama that is incredibly pointed and well executed. Its an attempt at breeding Neon Genesis Evangelion with Madoka Magicka--two incredibly different anime masterpieces. It takes themes and storytelling techniques from both and has beautiful animation and a good soundtrack. This was an anime with ambitions, it knew where it was going, didn't tell you, and dragged you along anyway. This is a show where every mystery or narrative gap is relevant, and where motifs run rampant.

TL;DR Should I watch it?
Yes. It was the most thoughtful show of 2014 for me. It entertained, it dug deep, and used the elements it borrowed to great effect. The narrative undertones might be concealed too deeply, and the show might've played it safe a few too many times for any widespread acclaim... but I think its worth seeing for yourself. On the other hand, if you haven't seen Madoka or Evangelion, this show could be something altogether different for you.

You're in luck, here are the best 3 anime this season: all originals.

The Rolling Girls is an amazing action/comedy. You have a TTGL avatar, I guarantee you'll like it. It is colorful and eclectic, if slightly bipolar. This is is an easy "MUST WATCH," and I'd place a priority on the three episode rule here--the first episode's main characters aren't the cast we'll have for the rest of the series, and introduces us to the world more than anything else. Episode 2 had me laughing harder than pretty much anything since Nichijou.

Yuri Kuma Arashi is a condensed Ikuhara work; if you've seen Mawaru Penguindrum, its similar in execution with a similar theatrical presentation. Its a show that if you aren't into symbolism or psych-analysis, you will simply not enjoy it. With some cheeky directing, he has even highlighted more subtle symbolism from previous episodes with the ones after--just in case you didn't catch it the first time around. Its a show that plays the medium to its fullest.
My brother who is relatively new to anime (watching some twenty titles) remarked, "The backgrounds and framing remind me a lot of Madoka Magika." Ikuhara is the one that Shaft took their inspiration from, with Revolutionary Girl Utena, mainly, and an anime that oozes such artistic merit is rare.
Also, its moe as fuck.

Death Parade (technically, there was a one-off OVA that was more of a pilot to this series than anything, I consider it original despite)
Death Parade is, so far, a fast-paced 'morbid' psychological thriller--so far, with what one might expect as a slow character drama replaced with rapid-fire melodrama intent on finding the extreme tinctures of people's souls. Its entertaining, beautifully animated and designed, and the familiar concepts are utilized to ask immediately relevant questions. This is the most straightforward anime recommendation to be had--if you like to be entertained, you'll enjoy this. Its already been called a great show for non-anime watchers... we'll see how that pans out.

also, if you aren't watching the continuing Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April) or Shirobako, I'm not sure what to say except that you missed out on the best anime last season as well

Neither of pretenses from those shows from last season seem that appealing to me. I'll probably check out the ones this season you have and give you my harshest criticisms.

I wasn't interested in them on my own at all. They were both later pick-ups, and turned out to be the best anime of the season--they may very well be among the top 5 anime of 2015, and I wouldn't want to say that prematurely.

Shirobako's pretense didn't really grab me, but the raves of the internet did--it is a very well executed look into the making of an anime from a personal perspective. Most of the studios and people are real (with a few facts moved around) and the stories are very grounded in reality. Its just very, very good. It really communicates the hardships and stress that they face, in an intensely human experience. First episode is incredibly cheesy, but, the show goes from there with a very consistent flow.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is a very emotional piece. It follows the youth of a child prodigy, showing the dark underbelly of what some may call straight up abuse. Shows like this rely very heavily on how real the characters feel--answering the question, "Why should I care about these kids?" and that is where this show is able to be grounded--in what has become an anime staple, the slices of life. This show doesn't give you time to think, just time to feel and to listen to the spectacle. I'm personally not very well informed with regards to classical music, composers, and the like--but the soundtrack for a show about musicians has to be perfect, and I've heard nothing but praise for its thoughtful appropriation of orchestral themes and compositions.

The message of this show is really just not being able to have your cake and eating it too--it turns that mundane reflection on life into something very colorful and vibrant.

I don't really get what the rampant fangirl obsession with Tokyo Ghoul is.

The first season was pretty boring until the last couple of episodes, the last one especially is the only reason I didn't write it off. I've read a bit of the manga now and watching the second season to see how it's different. So far it's taken 3 episodes for anything really to happen, so my hope for an entirely awesome season is ruined.

Yuri Kuma Arashi episode 4 just completely and utterly blew me away. It was a mostly self-contained narrative that used the world built in the first 3 episodes (a flashback to character origins) to convey a story flawlessly. The combination of backgrounds, art, music, extremely careful shot framing, subdued humor, and emotional honesty... it was a masterclass in everything that anime can be, and it was all contained within a single episode.

While the show is very eccentric, it uses that eccentricity to build a world free of bias and most importantly, full of earnest. It says, "This is the truth," and you are unable to give it any doubts. If you can watch the first three episodes with an open, with bonuses for an inquisitive and analytical, mind and appreciate them, you're in for a treat.

Ikuhara is old, his masterwork dated, and the rest of the industry has been using his tricks and methods to universal acclaim (Madoka Magicka and Monogatari have rivals only in each other) but here, he kicks them into overdrive and gives them a new level of mastery to attain. If any show this year can nail an episode like this, where so many others swing ambitiously and miss utterly (I'm looking at Aldnoah.Zero...) then anime will have seen a new age.

Is this copypasta or did you come up with this? I don't normally read your walls of text, but I'm glad I did because holy hell is this some pretentious bullshit. You managed to describe an animated tv show episode as if you were talking about a Michelangelo masterpiece. That's actually kind of impressive.

So is my fingerpainting. There is a huge difference.

If you took the same attention to detail and technique (artistry) that Michelangelo or anime directors or film directors did, then yes, it would be. Would the sistine chapel's fresco be less brilliant if it were made by someone posing to be Michelangelo?

medkit
02-06-2015, 07:37 PM
My point wasn't that your tv show isn't art. I'm sure Ikuhara spent lots of time on each episode, perhaps even as much time as Michelangelo spent on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The point was that you are using very pretentious, flowery language typically reserved for such works of art.

Most people would describe a beloved tv episode or movie in very different terms. A good example is Shade's movie review blog posts if you honestly don't understand how normal people review things.

I think the language used is explicitly appropriate. I wouldn't use that language when describing almost any other anime--as one reviewer said (B0bduh), Ikuhara's work tends to lend itself to that type of close-reading. My favorite anime, Shinsekai Yori, is a science-fiction epic that lacks the same sort of artistry and execution that Ikuhara uses, and I wouldn't describe it in anywhere near the same way. I was being very intentional, because it fits. Some others in the guild have watched Mawaru Penguindrum, and they would understand this.

I was just in Japan in December for work. I was supposed to be there again this month but a few things with the schedule changed.

Mathies
02-11-2015, 03:52 AM
FOR REAL TOPIC, I'm doing it again, because I want some of the more seasoned anime veterans to give it a shot:

Yuri Kuma Arashi has continued to be really fucking good. If you make it through the first couple episodes with an inquisitive mind you'll be treated to an amazing anime. If it continues at this pace, it might be a masterpiece; Ikuhara has never done a short show (Utena at 57(?) episodes, Mawaru at 26(?)) and so far these six episodes are breaking more ground than Mawaru did in ten--and this show is going to 12.

Is it for everyone? Probably not. The psychological thriller is a vehicle used to get you to the thoughtful construction of social structures. If 1984 had lesbian bears in a world with (evidently) very few men, this is it. The personal struggles faced by the MC are always heavy in atmosphere--the eclectic, but pointed, styling of characters and setting adds some flexibility to the drama and stage-play feel. It is a social commentary with excellent framing and nearly perfect artistry, while still allowing you to laugh and overall just enjoy the show as it speeds up.

Why should you watch it?
Its really, really, good in so many ways. Its cute, its funny, its silly, its depressing, its complex and thoughtful and oozes beauty.

Why wouldn't you watch it?
At first glance at the opening or some selective screencaps, it can appear to be overtly sexually charged.

Like Monogatari, sexuality (amidst an almost all-female world) plays a large role. It isn't used humorously (ecchi) or abusively (bad fan service) while promotional materials (official art, the opening, etc.) definitely use it to sell. This is off-putting, not in a vacuum, but because of the land-mine filled landscape of anime composed of ecchi harems and shallow plots. Yuri Kuma Arashi is definitely gunning for an emotional, rather than physical, response in its tactful interpretation of personal relationships.

How can it still be entertaining if you're talking about it being 'deep' and 'artful'?
Despite a lot of the 2deep4u interpretations and extensive close reading of details (from the composition of individual shots to the slightest objects revealing more subtle clues to the world and characters) the show still has enough fun and some clever highlighting to keep you along without you being able to get lost, and compelling dialogue in its writing that continually exceeds all expectations.

English subbed or English dubbed? English dubbed means that there is English speech, English subbed means that there is English subtitles. There is no anime that is 'actually english and not english dubbed' because anime (as used in English) refers to Japanese animation. So I'm going to assume you meant English dubs...

Most Western anime licencors include an English dub in their releases, and you can usually find these online as well. Most every popular anime in recent times receives a dub--usually of a decent quality. I don't think an anime has been mentioned in this thread that DOESN'T have a dub, which just means that you need to look for them (usually using the keywords "dub" or "english audio")

Puella Magi Madoka Magica 12 Episodes, with a sequel movie
Ranked number 1 on my personal Top 20 anime list

Dub stream on Netflix in USA

The dub is fine. This is an anime that I urge anyone to watch, period. It is a masterpiece that is made to destroy your expectations of anime with phenomenal writing (written by Gen Urobuchi), animation (directed by Akiyuki Shinbo at SHAFT, my favorite studio), and soundtrack (by Yuki Kajiura and Kalafina. Just listen to this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwquipMpsiQ WARNING: DO NOT EVER READ ANY YOUTUBE COMMENTS ON ANYTHING EVEN REMOTELY RELATED TO ANY ANIME EVER. Popular anime like Madoka are spoiled in every comment thread ever.) The Japanese voice actresses put on a hell of a performance, but, I think that between not watching it and watching it as a dub, you're still better off watching it as a dub.
If you watch the first episode or two and you think you might not like it--KEEP WATCHING. You would sorely regret stopping it if you were to finish it later. This is the best selling late-night TV anime series since the advent of the Blu-ray medium for a reason.

Psycho-pass 35 Episodes, with a sequel movie
Ranked number 12 on my personal Top 20 anime list

Season 1 is on Netflix, Season 2 on Funimation.com

Also written by Urobuchi, this is his gritty sci-fi series that everyone wanted after Madoka. He didn't write the second season, which is good in a vacuum but pales in comparison to the standard set for the first season. This is the number one anime that I'd recommend to my parents--it's similar enough to the core of late night American crime dramas, and familiar in its themes to Western literature and cinema

Steins;Gate 25 Episodes, with a sequel movie
Ranked number 17 on my personal Top 20 anime list

Dub stream on Funimation.com (official source) or in any number of illegal sources; movie sequel is as of yet un-dubbed, however.

Extremely popular gateway anime, psychological sci-fi thriller; one of the series I've watched both dubbed and subbed, and though I prefer the subs, the English dub is very good. Its a slow, but necessary, start.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion 50 Episodes
Ranked number 19 on my personal Top 20 anime list

Dub not available to be legally streamed, pirating required

Similar to TTGL (below), except much more of a political game than anything. If you don't think /too/ hard about any of it, you're in for a hell of an entertaining ride--and it has a phenomenally compelling conclusion. Dub was highly recommended by a friend, though I watched it subbed.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood 64 Episodes
Does not make my personal Top 20 anime list, special mention due to its extreme popularity

Dub stream on Netflix in USA

You said FMA, not sure if you meant the original FMA or Brotherhood, but, if you haven't seen Brotherhood, watch it! This is an anime where the dub is better than the sub.

Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann 27 Episodes
Does not make my personal Top 20 anime list, special mention due to its extreme popularity

Dub not available to be legally streamed, pirating required

Over-the-top action, ridiculous, entertaining. Slightly older than other titles, but, a staple of gateway anime.

Attack on Titan 25 Episodes
Does not make my personal Top 20 anime list, special mention due to its extreme popularity

Dub stream on Funimation.com (official source) or in any number of illegal sources
Well, the most popular gateway anime since DBZ or Naruto. If you haven't heard of it, you're probably living under a rock. But I'm putting it here anyway--it does indeed have a dub.

Parasyte has been pretty good. Much better than Tokyo Ghoul cuz the anime really sucks.

I love them both.

I love them both.

I really enjoyed root A, and then i read the manga. God, the anime is fucking awful. Literally missed the ENTIRE plot point of that arc.

Ive heard more about Sailor Moon then I ever wanted to know from a few friends over the years.

It gets both bizarre and awesome at the end, where the fights are almost dbz-esque in the sense that theyre punching each other across galaxies, and then it turns out everyone is gay for Sailor Moon. Like... everyone.

Saturn and Uranus were originally a lesbian couple, they had to change the dialog in the English Dubs

It was Uranus and Neptune. And pretty much every other character in the show was in love with moon. The manga got weird from what I understood

I'm somewhat interested in watching the original Sailor Moon episodes directed by Ikuhara because I'm a fan of his work (http://wikimoon.org/index.php?title=Kunihiko_Ikuhara) as my previous posts can attest to with Mawaru Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi mentions. However, I don't really have an interest in watching any of the rest of it, so, I may not ever do that. RIP?

On that note, Yuri Kuma Arashi finished yesterday and it was an undeniably great series--however, it did feel too short and very dense in structure with very few sub-plots and felt like more of a bee-line through until the end. Still, makes its debut on my top 20 at number 14.

My greatest regret is not having watched Revolutionary Girl Utena yet. It is definitely an anime that I won't watch idly (playing Hearthstone and watching comedy-centric anime, for example) but finding the time for it has been a challenge. I don't want to hype it too much for myself, but, it seems absolutely like everything I would want in an anime outside of science fiction.

edit: forum doublepost, ooooops

edit2: using it as a Log Horizon post

so, Log Horizon season 2 finished, and with it the adaptation of most of the existing source material. The writing was inconsistent, the animation was terrible, but it still offered a compelling view point in an entertaining way. There was a certain 'buzz word' that gets thrown around--'gamer psychology,'--that is most at home in Log Horizon. When it comes down to it, most of us as gamers approach things in a similar way, and the breadth of our differences is oft less than that of gamers and non-gamers. Log Horizon brings gamer psychology into intimate contact with the rest of the world, that is, gamers making their way through the world. How does gamer psychology fit into government? socio-economic policies? trade? war? family? jobs and careers? Log Horizon frames these questions and entertains in their stride, by giving us a world that is familiar enough.

While the action and raid sequences are few, and their animation quality leaving much to be desired, they are still true to form and compelling. The highs of character and plot development manifested later in this season, and in some cases didn't manifest at all in the first. While a direct hit to the production quality was taken, I believe this season still manages to trump the first. What the series really lacks is polish--if given a ufotable treatment like fate (which, as much as its fan base will disagree, has a far more compelling anime adaptation than source material) or a Shaft treatment like Monogatari, it could be a timeless masterwork. Sadly, this is not the case for what it is now, and it is unclear whether it will be continued at all, if even this decade.

Log Horizon 2 earns an 8/10, because that is the absolute highest I can give it, because the ideas it brings to the table succeed in spite of the tremendous issues that the rest of the series brings.

NEW SEASON HYPE?

Best Sequel/Continuation:

OreGairu 2 (short hand)
(Romaji Title: Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru)
(English Popular Title: My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU)
(English Literal Title: My youth romantic comedy is wrong as I expected.)
http://i.imgur.com/USsClUl.jpg
Terrible naming conventions aside, Season One was an absolute blast. Once described as Catcher in the Rye, anime style, the show follows a flawed protagonist and his warped view of the world around him. While not likely to appear in your literature classes any time soon, the characters are great and the humor played off of them is first class. Season One, while not particularly poor in the animation department, was done by a different studio--and season two upped the ante and with the success of season one, a large budget. An amazing looking show by all counts now, episode one of this season was amazing and I can't imagine the rest of this season not following up.

Best New Series:

Plastic Memories
http://i.imgur.com/DR40zNp.jpg
When it comes to new and original shows, Plastic Memories has quite the pedigree;

Director: Fujiwara Yoshiyuki; Engaged to the Unidentified, GJ-bu (Two successful recent shows with a lot of well written moe characters.)
Writer: Hayashi Naotaka; Steins;Gate, other Science Adventure V/Ns, Bravely Default (You should recognize those!)

So far, the premise is more firmly grounded in science-fiction than Steins;Gate ever was and is largely reminiscent of Time of Eve (number 4 on my top list) and human-robot-relations novels like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and somehow being crossed with the humor and character design of Engaged to the Unidentified. While Engaged WAS very cute and often funny, it did have a significant grounded and serious side and a similar feeling is definitely felt in this show.

This isn't vanilla science-fiction, nor is it your standard drama or comedy. It is some mix that seemed to hit the right feelings at the right time, and could definitely end up being the run away hit of the season--or critically successful and a commercial flop. It hits an intersection of the otherwise unrelated genres that I like, and that crossing could easily alienate fans of either--but, here's hoping it captivates everyone instead.

Special Mentions:

fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (continuation)
Well, Unlimited Budget Works is back and it looks prettier than ever. Not much to say--its a fan-favorite and dominating force in the anime industry already, though the cheesy dialogue and not-so-subtle fan service is definitely in full effect. fate/zero remains a far more compelling series but as far as action-centric entertainment goes, f/sn:ubw is a worthwhile investment of your time.

Gunslinger Stratos
Don't.

Is it wrong to try and pick up girls in a dungeon?
Also don't.

What do you think of the new Deathnote movie? I thought it was better than the reviewers said.
